What’s the first thing you look for in a coffee shop to get work done?
For me, since I don’t drink coffee (*gasp), my priority would be atmosphere/ambience.
In a foreign country, it’s the same.
This task might seem daunting at first because of many uncertainties – a language barrier, no free wifi, too many people, and the list goes on. But, rest assured we have you covered (at least in the highly visited area of Mexico City) with four spots if you’re near Condesa or Roma.
All of our picks below provide good reviewed coffee, free wifi, and a pleasant environment to be productive. But first, four reasons why you should work in a cafe.
Benefits of Working in a Cafe
A change of environment stimulates creativity
Caffeine to stay focused and awake
Meeting and collaborating with new people
Less Distractions
1. Blend Station
With a location in Condesa and Roma, Blend Station is a well-rounded shop with a wide variety of beverages, as well as pastries and full meals. The long bar-esque tabletop has enough space to fit laptops with notebooks while also making very ordering from the friendly baristas very accessible.
Better yet, a little further into the shop, you’ll find an open community space with tables, outlets, and people most likely (this place is fairly popular). For more information, Blend Station has a website (in Spanish) here.
2. Cielito Querido Cafe
With many locations around Mexico City, this cafe has become very recognized among locals. The single branch we visited was surrounded with these colorful panels that gave off a nice bohemian vibe. This cafe seemed to have a menu with a wider array of drinks than your typical USA coffee shop while also having a food selection beyond pastries. Talking to a few locals gave us the impression that Cielito is considered superior than Starbucks by many here. This assumption is further highlighted by their impressive instagram following of over 34k followers seen here.
3. Morona’s Cafe
Out of this list, Morona's fits to be the cafe with the most resemblance to a restaurant. You can see from the sign below, they offered chilaquiles for breakfast. Various other lunch items as well as fruit dishes are available as well. All tables are located on the outside underneath the large main sign, and there aren’t any outlets available. That being said, if you enjoy working in more of an outdoor environment, this could be your spot. For their hours and online presence, check their facebook page.
4. Starbucks
Even in Mexico, Starbucks has almost a cult following. It's plethora of locations and consistency helped them secure the last spot on this list. As expected from a global franchise, the classic menu items and pretty reliable public wifi still exist here. If all else fails, Starbucks won’t let you down as a coffee shop to work in, but we recommend trying some more local businesses like the ones above.
