With the arrival of the WSOP and most of the team being there now, today’s Weekly Wave is about a good mindset for poker and life.
The mindset required to play poker on a professional level might be undervalued by most of you tuning in to this week’s Weekly Wave. However, this approach can be applied to different aspects of life and produce similar positive results.
Poker is hard. It requires discipline, social psychology, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and many other similar adjectives that are sought after by companies, at least on paper.
Solutions for a Good Mindset
At this level, most players must adopt disciplined strategies to maintain a strong mental mindset due to potential downswings (extended time period of continued losses…) and other tilt factors. Some have looked to healthy mindset and mindfulness practices such as positive thinking, meditation and breathing practices. Other things like cold showers, eating healthy, and physical fitness can further help sustain a strong mental focus.
See, the interesting aspect about poker is that anyone can prepare and study to perform at his or her best. But, the variable of chance could turn expected wins into losses. That factor and the potential to make mistakes during big events that most don’t experience often also contribute. The best way to prime your mindset for optimal performance is trying your best, positivity, and not thinking life owes you anything. This combo is harder to execute than you think.
Now, let’s think about life. Life is just a series of decisions. Life is also hectic and unpredictable. Sometimes you’ll arrive at an event as prepared and ready as you can be, yet something goes wrong. External factors will always exist outside our control, and the first step to prime decision making is accepting this fact. Making the best decisions will vastly improve your life. Then, training your brain to stay positive will further enhance your life.
We’ll go over how in the near future.
