Half a Day in Cozumel

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

There is a reason Cozumel’s seas are mentioned in Luis Miguel’s famous song “Mexico En La Piel” which describes the best aspects of Mexico and Mexican culture. It’s sparkling blue waters will have you coming back again and again.

We ended up doing a day trip and definitely didn’t spend as much time as we should have at Cozumel. To get there from Playa Del Carmen (a continuation of our Playa Del Carmen journey here), we took a 45 minute ferry from downtown Playa Del Carmen near Plaza Playacar.

Two ferries leave every 45ish minutes, one from Winjet and one from Ultramar. The cheapest tickets we found were from Winjet and we bought them from one of the street salesmen. This turned out to be more expensive than at the actual Winjet station.

The salesman explained he was able to sell them at a lower price because he got a discount by buying tickets in bulk from Winjet.

We departed around 1PM and could only stay until 7PM. Given that we are terrible at planning, when we landed in Cozumel is when we finally researched some doable snorkeling spot with only a few hours left. We decided on Skyreef and grabbed a taxi.

We paid around 80 pesos per person. This included snorkeling gear (goggles with breathing tube), a locker, one draft beer, and a 5 min. shoulder/back massage. Wish we could’ve gotten some cool pics of the reef, but we left our phones on dry land. We spent a few hours at this spot and ended up leaving around 6PM. As first time snorkelers, Skyreef is the perfect beginner experience, with the deepest areas probably around 12 ft.

As we were walking back to the ferry, we walked on the streets along the shops of San Miguel de Cozumel, the main town of the island. You’ll get everything you’d expect and more from a tourist hotspot: restaurants (go for seafood; super fresh), street vendors, and various shops. Aside from the natural beauty of the island, the weather (most likely) and the energy of the environment is really a site to witness yourself. Read about our last leg of the trip as we hit up Tulum!
